People involved in management and planning are responsible for the way in which companies, organisations, services and projects are run and delivered. They will work in all sectors and at all levels from first line managers up to company directors.

The range of qualifications required for this type of work is extremely varied: a reasonable level of numeracy and literacy is sufficient for some jobs, whilst others require degrees.

Many jobs demand specialist knowledge and qualifications, such as an understanding of medical or legal terminology, finance or language skills. Most jobs require people with good organisational skills, who can communicate, deal swiftly and efficiently with different types of paperwork and work well within a team.

Business, management and administration can be studied at a number of levels, from Apprenticeships leading to NVQs/SVQs to postgraduate study.

IT literacy is important, from typing skills to specialist knowledge of computer programmes.

Many people learn and update their skills as part of a work-based or company sponsored training scheme. Some are recruited onto structured management training programmes and fast-track graduate schemes, which can lead to promotion.
