Transport is a service focussed industry. Logistics is the organisation of transport, services and supply.

There are many levels of entry into transport, and few age or educational restrictions apply, although all jobs require a good knowledge of English.

Apprenticeships at NVQ Level 2 may be available in smaller companies and Advanced Apprenticeships are offered by large operators, many in electrical, mechanical and aeronautical engineering. NVQs in Road Haulage, Distribution, Passenger Transport and Merchant Vessel Operations are also available.

Graduates are required for many jobs in senior management and at the operational level.

In transport, most organisations provide training for new entrants, followed by regular in-house courses for updating skills and knowledge. Many specialist jobs such as air traffic controllers or railway signallers involve regular checks and ongoing training.
