The construction industry is responsible for building the phyiscal world in which we all live.

The industry offers employment to people with a wide range of skills from craft workers to engineers. It needs people such as surveyors and architects, with technical and creative skills, who ensure that buildings and the landscape that surrounds them are both functional and attractive.

Workers in this industry must be able to work as part of a team and work well alone. They must be aware of the health and safety requirements at all times.

It is possible to enter at almost any level and work through to senior positions using a combination of experience and qualifications acquired along the way.

Craftspeople, such as carpenters, bricklayers and plumbers, may progress to become engineering technicians and construction managers.

Graduates may enter as civil engineers, architects and surveyors, and may work towards chartered status.

Apprenticeships are the recognised method of entry for many jobs and lead to NVQs Levels 2 and 3. They can provide the basis for further studies leading to technical, supervisory and management occupations, or self-employment
